Method Used in Course

Realization of course objectives depends upon both the instructor and the student. The instructor's role is primarily facilitator. The student bears the responsibility of learning; grades reflect what the student has learned.

Method of Evaluation

The maximum possible 700 points are composed of the following:

In-class Assignments 100 points

A total of 14 possible in-class assignments are possible within this course (not including the Community Development Project presentation). It is expected that a student will complete at least 10 of these assignments, worth a maximum of 10 points per assignment. Examples of these in-class assignments assignments are video handouts and ICA worksheets.

Community Development Project  500 points

The purpose of this project is to identify a problem (positive or negative) in a community that needs a plan developed (and theoretically implemented) to solve that problem. The instructor will serve as a facilitator to help guide you in developing that solution (you do the actual work--the instructor is a consultant).

First, you are required to submit a one-page proposal (word-processed). This is due to the instructor by the beginning of Class Session # 13. Second, the instructor will approve the proposal as is or with required changes. Presentations of the Community Development Project will take place during Class Session # 25 and Class Session # 26.

Grading Criteria for the Community Development Project

Attendance Grade  100 points

Attendance is required. However, there are various school related activities that conflict with afternoon class sessions. Therefore, attendance is required, but at least 20 out of 26 regular class sessions are computed into an attendance grade of 100 points.
